On this day in history: Terry Schiavo R.I.P.

This is from nytimes.com, "on this day" section:

March 18, 2005
Doctors in Florida, acting on orders of a state judge, removed Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. (The brain-damaged woman died 13 days later).

Why the hell is the last sentence in parantheses? Isn't that like the meat of the incident, that as a result, she died??

My edited "on this day":

March 18, 2005
Doctors in Florida, acting on orders of a state judge, removed Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. The brain-damaged woman died 13 days later. Her brain-damage was due to hardcore bulimia. (Let it be a lesson to us all)
